An etymological dissection of the word illustration produces several variations in meaning. The one I’m particularly fond of derives from the latin word illustrationem and means vivid representation and enlightening. An enlightening, the way I see things, doesn’t have to be a jaw-dropping, life-altering, profound experience – it can be as simple as a joke. But even at its most banal an illustration must be fresh and entertaining enough to provoke a sense of enlightenment. An image that doesn’t at least deliver that surprise and satisfaction is strictly speaking not an illustration. So the root of the word that’s my craft provides me with my aim and aspiration. How’s that for a pretentious blab!? /Jonas
